06410032

Like doonster, I’m finishing up relocating, although not to anywhere near as exotic as the Philippines. I’ll try to catch up on comments over the next week.

I find myself going round the edge of this to avoid the flag! By doing that one is aware of the graphic feel to this (seems to be all the rage at the moment.

I find this working on two levels. First there is the strong composition and then there is the feeling that perhaps one is missing a parade down on the street – isn’t that why the flag is there?

That is a very strong, no-nonsense building. The flag acts to help fill what would otherwise be too much of an empty space.

  2. matt Says:

I’ve no idea why this flag was here; it was affixed to some scaffolding that seemed to be serving no other purpose. It was initially the light that caught my eye, but then I noticed how the scaffolding and blocking buildings conspired to make a really solid frame.

  3. Rex Says:

The alignment of the horizontal bars and the features on the rear building makes me think that the flag is hanging off the buildings.

I don’t know why but the image makes me feel sad.

    Forlorn……………………………….

I do like this but can only put my finger on the following as the reason. The emptiness behind the flag on the left side is pleasingly balanced by the flick of the flag in front of the building on the right. The extra bits around the edge are rather weak though save the supports right and left.

  6. doonster Says:

I think it is the curl of the flag that works for me, drawing me to the tree. This adds the life to the otherwise solid, lifeless framing.

  7. Colin Says:

Lots of strong elements as people have mentioned, but it feels like the beginning of a story rather than a picture to view by itself. Alofs “The Americans”? Too corny, maybe ;-)

It makes me want to know more. A question *asking* picture.

  8. akikana Says:

‘…Alofs “The Americans”..’ I have been thinking exactly the same.

  9. John Ellis Says:

Ah…but does it take one to know one? Franks famously not being American and most of the country being outraged! Still, on evidence to date I would say that there could be an Alofs’ ‘Americans’.

Where is this? Where are you relocated to?

  10. matt Says:

Kate and I are in Washington DC. This is somewhere behind the Hirshorn Museum, I think.

I was thinking maybe that the Alofs Americans would be slightly less humanoid than the characters in the earlier work of the same name.

I feel sure that the robot overlords would create a triumphal arch out of a couple of metal beams tied to a bit of scaffolding :-)

“I was thinking maybe that the Alofs Americans would be slightly less humanoid than the characters in the earlier work of the same name.”

Agreed — maybe it would be better called Alofs America.

The flag and tree below it in the center are anchoring everything very nicely — as the buildings on either side lean in toward them. The way I can see through the flag and how it is blown up on one side makes it all much more lively than were the flag just a flat opaque rectangle.
