Creativity…productivity

Filed in Art - December 27, 2008

From time to time somebody finds a way of expressing an idea that so perfectly sums up that idea that it is worth holding on to the words – pretty much regardless of whether you agree with them or not. That’s how my Words not to lose page got started.

I’ve just added the following:

I want to push my creativity, not my productivity.

Kjell Harald

For whilst it is true that often productivity is a precondition for creativity, and whilst it is undoubtedly the case that practice is essential for any craft, and further, whilst it is beyond question that you can’t make good photographs unless you are making some photographs, productivity is definitely a proxy objective not a real objective. It is a means to an end that sometimes appears to become an end in itself.

I do wish that we had a word other than creativity for what we do. I think that that word is both a bad fit and has become polluted with its use to describe the creatives of the advertising world. However, until and unless I can think of a better word, I’ll stick with Kjell’s phrase. Words not to lose.

For some reason I immediately thought of SoFoBoMo after reading this.

    Sam,

Absolutely. Both the best and worst parts of sofobomo is the enforced productivity. It is a lovely tension that we all have to learn how to exploit.
